Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
