The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
